The Great White Egret Mating Dance - Nature and Wildlife Fine Art Photography by Mary Lou Chmura
The Great White Egret Mating dance is by far one of the most fascinating and impressive courtship dances of all. I absolutely love to watch the courting behaviors of these magnificent beautiful birds.
Beginning with their elongated necks in a backward S curve position with their long bills straight up and their long feathery plumes (also known as aigrettes), beautifully fanned out; the male egret will suddenly outstretch his elongated neck all the way up to the top and then without a moments notice he will snap it back down into the low crouching backward S curve position. When he reaches the bottom he will start outsrtetching his neck, once again, then suddenly snapping it back down; repeating this pattern over and over.
The male egret will do this dance numerous times and then stop for a brief time in between to preen his long feathery plumes.
I find this courtship behavior to be completely mesmerizing. I love the elegantly graceful fanning of the beautifully long plumes.
