LIFE AT THE PRESERVE
photography by Mary Lou Chmura
This February I was delighted to have experienced the migration of thousands of ring-necked ducks to central Florida. I was down at the Sharon Rose Wiechens preserve and heard this amazing sound from above, like a tremendous gust of vibrating wind. You can only imagine my joyful, heart pounding surprise to look up and witness a massive flock of ring-necked ducks arriving at the preserve.
They flew in flocks of hundreds at a time. When they had all finally landed, there were thousands covering the preserves. I was fortunate to be there on the very first night of their arrival. I continued to follow these ducks for the next 7 to 10 days. Each time was as an equally exhilarating experience. You just can’t put it into words. I never tired of the amazing vibrational palpable sounds, and visually stimulating captures of these beautiful ducks.
The ring-necked ducks, a relatively small diving duck with a tall peaked crown. The males are outstanding in their appearance with glossy black shiny heads and backs and gray on their sides. They also have a bright white spot on their side. The females are a grayish-brown,with a white eye ring. Both of the sexes have a white band near the tip of their gray bills.
I have often wondered what it must be like to actually live on a body of water, such as the Sharon Rose Wiechen Preserve and witness daily the wildlife that frequent these bodies of water.
Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful for the opportunity to visit frequently, but the thought always crosses my mind and I can’t help but marvel at what this might be like.
So today I am sending a shout out to all those lucky homeowners on the preserve and not cropping out those beautiful homes from my picture as it adds an entirely additional dimension to, “Life at the Preserve.”
